I achieve my artistic expression by refining the forms of nature and intensifying their beauty. What gives us pleasure in the natural forms? How can an artist transform the forms of nature into beautiful artistic objects? How can I further my artistic exploration of the encoded structure of shapes in the natural world? These are the questions that I address in Formed, a series of traditional medium, and large format photographs in black and white negatives. The images are shown as negatives and their orientation has been shifted. Elements that were normally overlooked now become of conscious value. The complex visual structures within the composition are revealed without the need for referential surroundings. The negatives are shown inside a custom designed and built light box.
The spectator can see what the images of Formed are made of, the repetitions, the reflections and the fine detail. This to me is where the photographic beauty is shown. The image reveals its makings, its form. The viewer can also see the negative as a single, two-dimensional impression. This facilitates the apprehension of the form in one glance. In these works the concept is its self-realization and the symbolic is contained within.
